VERSADYNE ELECTRICAL SURFACE PRETREATMENT

Enables Pad Printing on Olefins

One frequently-asked question that we hear from even the most experienced pad printers is: "Why is my ink coming off?" This usually is followed by several other questions from us such as, "What is the substrate?", "Was it pretreated?" and "What is the surface dyne level?" If a customer is attempting to print on any of the olefin group of plastics, the solution will likely include some form of surface pretreatment using the VersaDyne corona treating unit from ITW Trans Tech.

Change Surface Dyne Level
When properly applied to your substrate, corona discharge produces the higher surface dyne levels needed for good adhesion even on the more difficult-to-treat materials like polypropylene and polyethylene. It also enables you to save money by spending less time on your surface pretreating operation because parts can now be treated faster. The VersaDyne unit provides higher power corona treatment at 800 watts of output. That is almost 25% more power than our previous 600-watt version discharge spot treater.

PAD BLOWERS

• Shortens "Flash" Time of Ink Solvents
• Easily Adapted to Various Pad Printing Applications
• Improves Productivity

When our print lab technicians meet with customers and engineering staff to discuss any new project, certain accessories are frequently recommended. Pad blowers are so necessary to proper pad printing that we now include them in every quote. They are downright indispensable to successful image transfer.

It is extremely important to use compressed air (10 p.s.i. max.) that is clean and dry, preferably supplied by a compressor equipped with a regulator and desiccant filter. Otherwise, you will be adding to your headaches by blowing oil and water onto your pad, ink and parts. Also you may be interested in substituting one of our de-ionizing units as a pad blower. This will give you the added effect of reducing static on your pad to lessen the dust problems found with some plastics or work environments.

Contact Derald Shadden at (256) 778-8141 or email derald@padprintpro.com for additional details or for a recommendation on the best set-up for your operation.

HOLDING FIXTURES

One valuable special service that customers demand is our in-house fixture building. It is a key element in the complete pad printing solution package. We can take a production part and fabricate a holding fixture that properly secures the part for accurate pad printing as well as enables easy loading and unloading.

Because there are an infinite number of possibilities in fixture design, it is important to specify customer requirements up front while the machine is in the concept stage.

ANTI-STATIC EQUIPMENT

Anti-Static accessories from ITW Trans Tech are useful for maintaining pad surface cleanliness and image quality in manual as well as automated single and multicolor pad printing operations. These devices help to greatly reduce part rejects and increase productivity by neutralizing static charges on and near the printing pad and part, thereby reducing dust attraction and its resultant printing problems.

De-ionizing Charged Particles
Static control is a practical concern for any pad printing operation that decorates various substrates, especially plastics that have a tendency to generate and hold static charges. Unless de-ionized, these charges may attract unwanted dust particles to the part and pad that interfere with proper ink adhesion, thus impairing print quality.

Easily Interfaced and Adjustable
These flexible, modular units are designed to enable easy interfacing with our most popular pad printers because of the variety of sizes and adaptability to nearly any application or part size.

INFRARED (I/R) INK CURING SYSTEMS

Infra Red Ink Curing for High-Volume Production

INFRARED (IR) is an effective means of curing pad
printing inks applied as dark images on light-color substrate materials. The infrared light waves are absorbed by the dark-colored print area only, whereas the light color of the substrate reflects the infrared light. Hence, heat is only generated in the printed surface area. This makes it an efficient way of almost instant drying of the ink without heating up the part. This is especially important for fragile parts, such as thin-walled products, sheets or low heat-resistance materials.

Advantages
Some significant advantages of IR curing are:
• Low noise level
• Cured parts can be almost immediately handled after treatment for further processes
• Reduction of possible print damage due to quick ink drying
• Low power consumption
• Minimal heating of adjacent work area
• Instant maximum cure output.
